Field notes and information
A large pale species, widespread but usually found in low numbers.
Identification & Similar species: The species is pale, with highly contrasting upperside markings - black, white and usually rich or pale brown markings. Discal hyline markings are broad. Hindwing markings are strong, particularly the discal band. The underside is relatively uniform and pale and the spots and bands are rather indistinct.
Distribution & Flight: Generally south of a latitude running through Switzerland. Also the Atlas mountains of north Africa. Flies in a single brood from late May to July.
Habitat & Behaviour: Grassy flowery places, usually with rocks. May fly amongst scrub.
The resting position is unusual. The wings are wrapped around the body hiding the legs and the abdomen is curved up high above the thorax.
