Field notes and information

This is a very distinctive species, found infrequently and locally in much of the Iberian Peninsular and south France. It can be common when and where found.

Identification & Similar species: The underside markings are unmistakable.

Distribution & Flight: Iberian Peninsular and south France. A single brood, usually June to mid July.

Habitat & Behaviour: Linked to its food plant ash Fraxinus which itself is limited to riverside habitats in the hot localities frequented by the butterflies. Adults fly high around the trees, often coming lower down to nectar.
