Field notes and information

The almond shaped markings make this one of the more distinctive Erebias.

Identification & Similar species: A rather distinctive species, with almond shaped eyespots.

Distribution & Flight: Confined to Europe. It is principally an Alpine species (France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria) also from the mountains of central Italy and some mountains of the northern Balkans. There is conflicting information about its presence in northwest Spain. It flies from around 1000 to 2200m.

Flies from mid June to August, it is one of the earlier summer Erebias on the wing.

Habitat & Behaviour: Grassy places, often lush, usually amongst scrub or woodland.
