Phalakron Massif, N Greece, July 2000

This species has a very limited world wide distribution, being found only on the mountains in a small region of N Greece and SW Bulgaria. Tolman's field guide reports that they are occasionally found lower than normal during population explosions - this was the case in 2000 when we found them as low as 350m above sea level. They were not hard to find and often where there were tall (over 1m high) thistles there would be several butterflies in attendance. We also found them in their normal altitudinal range  over 1000m but here they seemed to be more localised, presumably those that didn't wander lower down stayed close to their breeding grounds.
