Fast. Very fast. I've not seen many examples of
this southern European butterfly but when I have seen them it is usually
for only very brief moments. They fly in very hot places that presumably
helps them maintain their incredible speed and achieve exceptional
reactions. Fortunately, they do tend to come back to the same location.
This behaviour allowed me to photograph the butterfly, at a site near Marrakech in 2005,
where 3 or 4 that were
resident in the corner of a Lucerne field. To get this photo I lay in
wait for one of the butterflies to return and, just before it flew, I
snapped this photo. This location is the only time I've ever seen more
than one individual in one place.
In Morocco I've found the butterfly in 5 places: Ouzazarte (just 1),
Ourika (just 1), Er Rachidia (just 1), Marrakech (4!) and Oulmes (just 1). I've also
seen it in Greece (just 1) and the desert edge of Tunisia (just 1). |
