This is the only butterfly on my site
that I've never seen. The reason I include it is that my father
has seen it and photographed it. It is confined to the Mediterranean
islands of Corsica and Sardinia flying July. It appears to be widespread
and common in the mountainous regions of Corsica.
Unusually for a
Hipparchia, this butterfly is highly distinctive and is easily separated from
the other Hipparchia species. The bright colours, contrasting
markings differentiate it, although on these islands there is only one
other Hipparchia species, the Southern Grayling, Hipparchia
aristaeus.
