This butterfly flies throughout out the Alps and in a couple of places in Italy. I've found it commonly in southern Switzerland, northern Italy and France. The underside is very distinctive. It is dark with heavily contrasting white markings. The upperside has strong orange markings and the underside forewing is especially bright orange. Overall there is little chance of confusing this species with any other.
