It is found in central and northern Europe in lush damp meadows. It is widespread and usually common in the right habitats. It has a cousin, the Marbled Fritillary, B. daphne. That species is larger but otherwise rather similar. The easiest sure way of distinguishing them is on the underside hindwing. Space 4 (at the end of the cell) contains a yellow rectangle in ino. In daphne the outer half is filled with brown scales.
