| Another tricky member of the Pygrus
group. This is most likely P. carlinae. It is a bright red ground
colour and distinct white markings. Particularly prominent is the large
white rectangular patch in space 5 that touches the outer margin which
helps separate it from P. armoricanus and P. cirsii. The
post discal band is broken in space 3 - I would expect there to be some
marks in each space between veins to complete the band in armoricanus
and cirsii. The ground colour in armoricanus is rather
more mottled, not the solid colour shown in the above butterfly. On the
upperside there are two marks mid way along spaces 2 and 3. These are
separate rectangles in carlinae (may just touch in some cases).
These marks are clearly merged in cirsii forming a wavy "S" shape.
This species overlaps with the very similar P. cirsii in the
French Alps. It extends into the southern mountains of Switzerland where
it can be found at high altitudes (we've found it at 2300m but reportedly
it rises upto 2900m). At the lower end it drops down to 900m so there is a
considerable overlap with P. cirsii which flies from low levels to
approx. 1500m. I expect the exact ranges of these species are not fully
defined due to confusion over ID in the field. |
