Field notes and information

A strongly marked species widespread in Spain and north Africa.

Identification & Similar species: The forewing cell has a broad black cross line. Underside hindwing with fine black markings and blue pupilled brown spots.

Distribution & Flight: Most of Spain to the foothills of the Pyrenees, absent from the north coast. All of north Africa north of the Sahara. From April to June depending on location.

Habitat & Behaviour: Grassy places, usually rocky or stony.
