Field notes and information

A distinctive species, extremely local in a small part of northwest Greece and the Croatian coast.

It has a synonym of Proterebia phegea.

Identification & Similar species: There are no similar species.

Distribution & Flight: Only from northwest Greece and the Croatian coast. Very local but farily common where found. Flies early in the year in late April and May.

Habitat & Behaviour: Hot dry grassy stoney slopes. It flies just above the grass in an undulating flight with wings mostly closed. This makes them highly visible over green grass and their large black forms can be seen from quite a distance.
