Tessellated Skipper
Muschampia tessellum

Distribution: Found sporadically in N Greece, FYROM, Bulgaria and Romania.

Identification: Many bright white upperside spots. Series of post discal spots on upf number 4 or 5. Unh marginal lobes are bold, large and white. A large species, the same size as the Safflower Skipper, Pyrgus carthami, with which it flies. Very close to the Spinose Skipper, Muschampia cribrellum, with which it also flies in Romania. Key to distinguishing it from this latter species is a triple pair of spots in space 2 on the upper forewing, two pairs of which are in the discal area.

Flight time: June.

Habitat: Dry grassy slopes with scrubby patches. Larvae foot plant are Phlomis species.
