This is a widespread butterfly across all of Europe except parts of Scotland and most of Scandinavia. It flies early in the year. It is very fast on the wing darting low over the grass and dry ground in sun traps. They can be territorial but the territories are small and there are often neighbours - bouts of scrapping are frequent!
