These oak trees in Greece were covered in many dozens of quercus taking shade

This species is usually difficult to get close to. Its habit of flying high around the tops of Oak trees makes photographs a relatively rare occurrence. It is not difficult to find across Europe wherever mature Oaks can be found in forests and woodland but unless the tree tops are searched specifically for it it isn't usually encountered. It is absent from Scandinavia but is found in the mountains of north Africa. It does come down low in the very early mornings where it seems to take water or at least it appreciates the dampness. Generally I find it is rather rare in the scrub oak forests of lower altitudes in southern Europe, preferring the taller forests found at higher elevations.
