Awful photo of
very old female but it shows the extreme variegation in orange
ground colour across the wings. |

|
|
A highly variable species. It is characterised by
the broken black lines that border the discal band on the underside (a
feature it shares with the Glanville, Spotted and Lesser Spotted
Fritillaries, M. cinxia, M. didyma and M. trivia
and the rare Aetherie and Freyer's Fritillaries, M. aetherie and
M. arduinna), striped appearance on the upperside caused by changes
in ground colour of the bands crossing both wings and the lack of black
spots in the post discal band on the underside hindwing (separating it
from cinxia and arduinna). |
