This Erebia is a common site in many parts of the high mountains of southern Switzerland - especially parts of Vaud, Valais and Grisons. So it is rather disappointing that after 2 seasons living in the Alps that I have only one photo of this butterfly! At least it shows the key characteristic of the presence of un pupilled orange spots. There are several similar species that have these spots in the same place but always several of them have small black centres.

It flies at high levels in grassy alpine meadows and also well above the tree line in favourable locations. As with almost all the Erebias it loves large orange/ yellow Compositae where it can often be seen feeding avidly.
