This is a widespread and often common species in the high mountains of the Alps, Carpathians, northern Balkans and across the hills and mountains of Scandinavia. It is also found in the eastern Pyrenees where I believe it is rather rare.

It likes generally rather damp places at high altitudes flying over expansive grass with generally few flowers and no trees. In Scandinavia scrubby areas with open wet bogs is a typical habitat.
