This is a variable species found in the mountains
of the Alps, France, Italy and Spain. In my experience it is not easy to
come across in the Alps but is one of the commonest alpine butterflies
in the Pyrenees. The butterflies I've found in the Alps are generally
very dark on the underside.
This species is superficially similar to the rarer and more local de
Prunner's Ringlet, E. triaria. The relative position of the spot
in space 6 in the upperside forewing post discal band is key. In meolans
this spot is often absent (as in photo above) and when present it is
generally small and falls outside the line of the spot in spaces 4 and
5. |
