This is a variable species found in the mountains of the Alps, France, Italy and Spain. In my experience it is not easy to come across in the Alps but is one of the commonest alpine butterflies in the Pyrenees. The butterflies I've found in the Alps are generally very dark on the underside.

This species is superficially similar to the rarer and more local de Prunner's Ringlet, E. triaria. The relative position of the spot in space 6 in the upperside forewing post discal band is key. In meolans this spot is often absent (as in photo above) and when present it is generally small and falls outside the line of the spot in spaces 4 and 5.
