Black Ringlet
Erebia melas

Distribution: Local on mountains across the Balkans from Greece to Slovenia and Romania.

Identification: When fresh it is jet black with intense white points. This is unlike any other species.

Flight time: Mid July/ September. It was fairly worn at the end of July in S Greece but fresh in N Greece in mid August.

Habitat: Rocks and grass at high altitudes near the tops of mountains.

Behaviour: Settles on rocks to gain heat, otherwise settling to nectar on Centaureae and other nectar plants.
