It may seem like just another Meadow Brown (Maniola
jurtina) but this is a very distinctive species, even more so in
life than in the photos. The upperside is well marked and bright orange
contrasting strongly with the brown ground colour. The underside
resembles an extremely well marked Dusky Meadow Brown, H. lycaon.
However, the very bright underside markings of the males helped make
this positive ID. The photos above were from the Middle Atlas.
Unfortunately, despite finding many examples in the High Atlas they were
very difficult to photograph. They fly over grassy slopes but are not
common in the Middle Atlas. The High Atlas seem to offer better
conditions and the butterfly is more common here. |
