This is Europe's sole representative of the large family of Metal Marks, Riodinidae. This group is best represented in south America but it does extent to most other parts of the world. In Europe it is widespread in central Europe, extending southwards into Greece in east.

Its English name is misleading as it isn't one of the true Fritillaries of the family Nymphalidae. The orange ground colour with black markings is however similar.
