| This is a very smart butterfly. It is
one of the Small Whites (Artogeia) but is by far the most
distinctive. Its upperside black markings are unlike any other and the
underside hindwing (of which I do not yet have any photos) is a very
distinctive solid green in the basal half of the wing with white patches
further out. I've only found it at two places in NW Greece. Both sites
were on steep but rocky hillsides with bushes and sparse grasses. It doesn't
appear to be very common anywhere and is known to be very local but it is
allegedly widespread across the southern and central Balkans. |
