Mt Gennargentu, Sardinia, May 2003

As the books had warned us, the second (partial) generation of this species that flies May/ June was very scarce. We only found three worn individuals in 7 days at the end of May. The two photographs above are of the same insect, the one in best condition. It is possible that we were between broods but more likely the very early season in 2003 brought them out early.

insularis has a very limited distribution, flying only on Corsica and Sardinia. It is somewhat more mottled green on the underside than its close relatives but as none of them fly on these two islands there is little chance of confusion.

As you can see, we didn't get very good exposure to this species - a second visit to Sardinia or to Corsica earlier in March/ April to find the first brood might have to be organised one day.
