Marbled White
Melanargia ines
Distribution: Most of Spain to the foothills of the Pyrenees, absent
from the north coast. All of north Africa north of the Sahara.
Identification: Underside hindwing spots with blue pupils. Underside
hindwing lines are black and fine in both sexes. In comparison, Western Marbled
White, M. occitanica, has thick brown lines.
Flight time: April to June depending on location.
Habitat: Grassy places with or without trees. Feeds on various grasses
(Brachypodium
sp.).
Behaviour: Flies over grassland, amongst bushes, frequently stopping
to feed on available nectar sources.
