This is a local butterfly of southern Europe with tendencies to migrate northwards. It is very closely similar to the Berger's Clouded Yellow, C. alfacariensis. Identification hints are given under that butterfly. To illustrate how similar these species are, I recount a little story. In some of the early books on the butterflies of the UK there was only one known migrating "pale" Clouded Yellow. Illustrations in these books were usually the relatively far rarer migrant Berger's Clouded Yellow, C. alfacariensis. The speculation is that because they are the brighter butterfly they would look better on the illustrations.
