Corsican Swallowtail,
Papilio hospiton

Distribution: Corsica and Sardinia only.

Identification: Flies with the Swallowtail, P. machaon from which it can be readily distinguished - please see key to the Papilio.

Flight time: mid May to July but occasionally recorded earlier in the year. Seems to be passed its best by early July.

Habitat: Literature states open grassy, rocky places in hills, I've only seen one individual so I' can't really comment! Larvae feed on a several Umbelliferae (Carrots) and Rutaceae (Rues).

Behaviour: Reportedly hill-tops, the males congregating at the top of a hill where they remain on the wing for many hours. Frequently take nectar from Thistles.

Additional notes: My father visited Corsica in July where he found the butterflies to be very local and strongly attracted to patches of thistles. This gave photo opportunities (see above) but the butterflies were constantly vibrating their wings which lead to blurring in some photos. His butterflies were also slightly worn but much less so than my May example.
