A species I've found at only two sites - one in Greece, one in France. Both sites were very dry grassy meadows with scrub. It flies from the end of May and into June. It is the largest Fritillary on the wing at the time. It is distinguished in flight by this size and uniform bright orange uppersides, reminiscent of the Spotted Fritillary, Melitaea didyma, in colour. Closer up, It is a distinctive Fritillary with two "parallel" rows of spots on the hindwing, clearly visible in the photos above.
