| I love this butterfly. It is so
delicate. The males have a pale lemon yellow ground colour and a huge area
of orange on wing tips. The female is very slight and small. She has a
relatively large cell spot on the upperside. Both have the typical Orange
Tip mottled markings on the underside. They fly locally but commonly
across the north western Greece where they are easy to find in early May.
It also flies throughout the rest of central and southern Greece - I've
not visited during the flight period. During a visit to the same region at
the end of May, early June we found only one butterfly. It flies over
grassy places amongst scrub in hills and mountains. Most of these
habitats are very dry but support lush vegetation in places, at least in
May. |
