A butterfly that is found usually at the highest levels in the mountains of the Alps and Pyrenees and a few isolated areas in the Balkans and central Italy. It is always found near natural screes or stony areas artificially kept bare by man's activities.

It is very variable. It has a characteristic broad upperside orange band. This is perhaps the most constant feature. In this band there are usually two or three ocelli at an unusually steep angle relative to the direction of the band. The underside is often heavily scaled white or grey and, in some regions, has a number of submarginal black ocelli.
