In western Europe this species is confined to the higher
mountains of Spain and France. Further east it is much more widespread
from the southern Balkans then again from central Europe to northern
Scandinavia. In the Balkans the undersides are generally more golden in
colour. I always find it where its foodplant grows. It's not by chance
that several of my photos
shows the butterfly feeding on the foodplant. They are not uncommon
where they occur but this can be a very limited area depending on the
suitability of the terrain for the foodplant. In some instances the
foodplant is widespread and may even form dense patches. In these places
the butterfly is sometimes common. |
