In western Europe this species is confined to the higher mountains of Spain and France. Further east it is much more widespread from the southern Balkans then again from central Europe to northern Scandinavia. In the Balkans the undersides are generally more golden in colour.

I always find it where its foodplant grows. It's not by chance that several of my photos shows the butterfly feeding on the foodplant. They are not uncommon where they occur but this can be a very limited area depending on the suitability of the terrain for the foodplant. In some instances the foodplant is widespread and may even form dense patches. In these places the butterfly is sometimes common.
