Could do better with these photos of a fairly common species of the high European mountains. It is one of only two Erebias to occur in the UK where it is found in Scotland and Cumbria, England. Infact during the 2003 season I saw very few examples of this butterfly in contrast to almost every other species. There are numerous subspecies and forms described of this variable butterfly. In the Alps and the Pyrenees the underside hindwing has a row of submarginal spots (if present) that are sometimes only lightly surrounded by an orange disk. These same black marks on the upperside have a definate orange disk. This separates epiphron from the other similar Erebias.
