This is the more widespread of two very similar
species of Agrodiaetus. Its very close relative is the Foster's Furry
Blue, A. ainsae. Refer to that page for more information on
identification. The current species flies in two regions of northern
Spain, in southern France and central Italy. There is a converging
movement suggesting the subspecies virgilius found in Italy is a
separate species. The males are usually illustrated as having a white
stripe on the underside hindwing. I didn't find this to be common at all
in the butterflies I found in northern Spain in 2003. Infact I only
found one with anything like a well developed stripe. The rest had faint
images of the stripe or even lacked it entirely. The uppersides however
are of unmistakable pale blue. |
