individual as underside above, before it dropped from its
perch in the cool April morning
Distinctive
angle in underside hindwing is clear here - see E. tagis. |

It is found ranging across the countryside of
southern Europe and north Africa as far east as northern Italy. From
Italy eastwards it is replaced by the indistinguishable Eastern Dappled
White, E. ausonia. It seems to like the lusher herbage of
cultivated areas rather than the surrounding dry habitats. It doesn't
fly particularly forcefully which makes it mostly distinguishable in
flight from the similar Bath White, Pontia daplidice which has a
very strong direct flight.
It is very similar to the Portuguese Dappled White, E. tagis.
See that species for a discussion on identification. |
