This is a widespread and often not uncommon butterfly of light woodland. They are very large and can often be seen from the car driving slowly though country lanes. They range from central France southwards and eastwards.

They have a strong tendency to rest on trees especially in the heat of the day where their large form can seemingly disappear, broken up by the cryptic markings. They are readily separated from the other Graylings by the white streak at the edge of the basal area.
