This is one of the six Brassy Ringlets. It is the most widespread species flying in various mountains from the Balkans, eastern and western Alps, central Italy, Pyrenees and the Cantabrians. Distribution is probably the best method of separating these species but there are diagnostic wing characteristics too. This species most closely resembles the Swiss Brassy Ringlet, E. tyndarus. It differs from this species with much more pronounced upperside hindwing orange markings usually containing white pupilled black spots. The underside is usually less scalloped too.
