This is one of Europe's most widespread migrants. It spends the winter in southern Europe, migrating north every year. In many respects it is similar to its cogener, the Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui. The current species can survive the winter much further north and has recently been demonstrated that a few adults have survived an English winter.

In the UK it is a very familiar butterfly of gardens and parks. It is strongly attracted to wild and cultivated flowers where it feeds avidly.
