| This is a lovely butterfly. There are
three species of Cigaritis in the W European zoological zone, and
this is the brightest. It is characterised by the extensive white
underside ground colour, the markings in the lower part of the post
underside hindwing discal area join with the marks in the discal area to
form a roughly continuous line, rather than with the the upper post discal
markings. The submarginal black spots are rather small and clearly
distinct. It flies only in north Africa in Algeria and Morocco where it
can be found from near sealevel (we found it at 150m in mid March 2001 - I
have no photos of this because I recorded over the tape) to high altitudes
into May and June. It seems to prefer open places with just a few shrubs
on very hot slopes. |
