| This is a very localised species found
only in a small region of northern Greece and coastal Croatia. We found it
in the Askion mountains of northern Greece in early May 2004. It was very
common, particularly on hill tops. It also flew lower down the slopes in
lower numbers.
It is a highly distinctive butterfly with unique features. In May it is
the only dark butterfly on the wing in these places. It closely resembles
the Erebia but that genus has no examples with grey wing tips.
Technically it is not an Erebia by wing venation alone as all other
features are shared with the Erebia. In habit it flies just above
the grass in an undulating flight with wings mostly closed. This makes
them highly visible over green grass as their large black forms can be
seen from large distances. |
