Lulworth
Skipper
Thymelicus lineola
Distribution: North Africa and all of Europe except Tunisia,
Scandiavia, N Germany and much of N Italy. In the UK only in the extreme SW.
Identification: Resembles the other "Golden" Skippers and overlaps its
range with all of them. This species has dark upperside ground colour with
broken markings and unmarked undersides. See
Identification Page for Golden
Skippers
Flight time: Apparently single brooded but flying from April until
August. All of my records from W Europe, including the hot interior of Spain,
are from July and August. In Greece and its islands I have found it in June and
July, Morocco in May (not June/ July) and Cyprus in April.
Habitat: Grassland or grassy patches in open woodland or scrub usually
with flowers. Larvae feeds on a range of grasses.
Behaviour: Often takes nectar from thistles and other summer meadow
flowers. Flies fast over grassy areas, with the typical Skipper whir.
Additional notes: This butterfly is rare in the UK and was first
discovered at Lulworth cove on the south coast. The butterfly takes its
English name from this location. It is known from about 60 colonies
running about 30km east and west along the chalk hills of the coast from
here. Elsewhere in Europe it is widespread but appears to me to be
rather patchy within its range.
