Field notes and information

A local but widespread species with two distinct subspecies. Please see separate page for the subspecies iphioides from north Spain.

Identification & Similar species: A reduced/ patchy underside hindwing submarginal band and a row of fairly uniformly sized spots are characteristic.

Distribution & Flight: Widespread but local from eastern France to Poland, Serbia and Romania. Sporadic further south into northern Greece.

Habitat & Behaviour: Grassy flowery places with scrub. Flies in a range of conditions from hot dry to damp places.
