Books

Butterflies of Britain and Europe - T. Tolman (1997), Collins The standard work on European butterflies. It covers most species and gives details of habitat, flight time and range. Of course opinions differ frequently on what is and isn't a species but this book covers most. Small enough to take in the field.
Ditto (2004) Apparently a straight reprint of the above work.
Butterflies of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia - J. Tennant (1996), Gem Excellent book covering north African species.
Butterflies of Cyprus - C. Makris (2003) Excellent book covering the fauna of this east Mediterranean island
Butterflies of Greece - L. Pamperis (1997) Interesting book packed with photos (of varying quality) but containing some suspect identification hints and little help in finding or understanding distribution of rarer butterflies. Not value for money.
Photographic guide to the Butterflies of Britain and Europe - T. Tolman (2001) Complimentary to Butterflies of Britain and Europe above. Some photos rather dark and indistinct and not all surfaces of both sexes shown so not a complete identification guide.
Les Papillons de Jour de France, Belgique et Luxembourg - T. Lafranchis (2000) Excellent book on the butterflies of France.
Butterflies of Europe - T. Lafranchis (2004) Very useful identification keys to all butterflies in Europe. For me it still leaves some questions on the most difficult species though...
